Human Rights Day

Mental Well-being and Accessible Support for All

As we mark Human Rights Day on December 10th, we must reaffirm the universal dignity inherent in every individual. The global theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” underscores the critical importance of human rights as fundamental pillars supporting our daily lives. This theme, alongside the inspiring slogan “All Human, All Equal,” drawn from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, requires us to recognize that these rights are essentials on which a life of well-being, freedom, and dignity is built for everyone. We, at Positive Developments, proudly stand behind this vision. Creating a  Culture of Care is a guiding principle – shaping how we support individuals, uplift communities, and ensure that every individual is respected, included, and empowered.

Mental health and human rights are interconnected concepts.

There can be no genuine mental well-being without peace, equity, and the full realization of human rights. In a period characterized by global instability, persistent conflict, and widespread forced migration, mental health consequences are profound. Exposure to violence, displacement, loss, and chronic uncertainty can lead to psychological distress, including PTSD, anxiety disorders, depression, and other mental health challenges. Too often, vulnerable individuals – especially people with disabilities – are unjustly blamed for the challenges they face.

The absence of comprehensive mental health services, coupled with significant barriers to access and lingering stigma, denies countless individuals the vital right to mental well-being, a core “everyday essential” for living a fulfilling life. This issue is particularly heightened for people with disabilities, who frequently face layered discrimination (due to both their disability and mental health status), a chronic lack of tailored support, and heightened risks of neglect or abuse.

The integration of trauma-informed care into all mental health services is essential.

This ensures that support recognizes the widespread impact of trauma, avoids re-traumatization, fosters healing, and respects the lived experiences and unique needs of every individual.

On this Human Rights Day, we advocate for the Culture of Care through the spirit of “All Human, All Equal.”

This perspective empowers individuals by providing the tangible tools and comprehensive support necessary for them to adapt, achieve self-determination, and promote independence.

It is our collective and urgent responsibility to dismantle systemic barriers, challenge discriminatory practices, and actively combat the pervasive stigmatization of mental health conditions and disabilities. This commitment requires the expansion of culturally sensitive, holistic, trauma-informed, and genuinely accessible mental health services and resources for all. These services should promote abuse prevention through strong safeguarding policies, clear reporting mechanisms, and empowering individuals with the knowledge to recognize and report abuse. All interventions and support systems should be geared toward sustaining the rights of every individual.

Let us commit to a future where mental health is explicitly recognized as a foundation of human rights.

Let us commit to a future where every person, regardless of their abilities, can exercise their right to a full, dignified, and mentally healthy life, based on the principle that we are “All Human, All Equal.”

Let us care for individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges through adopting and implementing the principles of “CULTURE OF CARE”.
